As we come closer to Spring out of this long, dark Winter, I feel a stirring of hope. I think others do too. We all improvised, adapted, made new plans, canceled old plans, changed our habits and daily routine and got vaccinated and boostered in the hopes that would protect us. It has been an odd time to be thinking about art, making art or showing art, but then again maybe making art is a “spit in the eye of despair,” as Stephen King puts it.
The six free-standing Construct pieces in the Improvisations series are as chaotic and unpredictable as the times in which they were made. They look a bit precarious, and appear fragile in places, but they are stronger and steadier than they look. Made with intentionally humble materials: balsa and basswood, glue, hardware and gesso, they look very different from different angles, and the relationship with their viewer changes too.
The eight dual digital-prints in the Construct/Digital Duo series were developed from photos of the Construct pieces. The images were cropped and manipulated in Photoshop. The imagery was then converted to color prints printed on Hahnemuhle paper. The color prints serve as background for black and white overlays drawn from the same manipulated photos. When the overlays are layered over the color prints, the 3D effect mimics the visual jumble of the Construct pieces.
For my last two exhibitions at Bromfield I’ve improvised with humble, sometimes intentionally damaged, materials. A reflection of the times, perhaps, but then again it may be because humble, broken or damaged materials are simply more interesting.
